Reimagining WishWell: Leveraging learnings from the Alpha App for a Fresh Start

When WishWell approached us, they had already developed an alpha version of the app. However, it had failed to achieve the desired engagement. Our starting point for the redesign was a deep dive into the client’s experience with the Alpha app.

We gathered key insights from their learnings—what went right, what went wrong, and their vision moving forward. These insights provided a valuable foundation for our design strategy, allowing us to build on their findings and craft a stronger, more connected experience.

Key Insights:
  • Disconnect Between Users: In the original app, users were mostly strangers, leading to low engagement. The new focus was to connect friends and loved ones, ensuring users were personally invested in the wishes.
  • High Engagement for Familiar Connections: The alpha app saw 80-90% engagement when wishes were shared within a personal network, confirming the power of close-knit communities.
  • Creating a Strong Network Effect: The redesign emphasized building a strong network effect through clusters of friends, family, and communities like support groups, ensuring long-term retention and scalability.

My Role & UX Strategy: Leading the Redesign with Purpose.

As the Design Lead for the WishWell project, I was responsible for not just the visual execution but also shaping the overall user experience strategy, aligning it with the project’s goals and the client’s vision. My role involved leading a cross-functional design team, translating stakeholder insights into actionable design strategies, and ensuring that the user always remained at the center of every decision.
  • I ensured the research and insights from the failed Alpha App formed the foundation of our design decisions, enabling the creation of a design roadmap tailored to user needs.
  • Divided the project into clear epics with sprints focused on specific feature sets, each with its own feedback loop for constant refinement.
  • Held internal feedback sessions at the end of each sprint, allowing design iterations before presenting to the client and reducing revisions.
  • Ensured accessibility by using high-contrast colors and easy-to-read font sizes, with thorough testing to make the app inclusive for all users.
  • Advised to adopt Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines to streamline development, and leverage iOS UI libraries for Figma for a native, consistent user experience.
  • To deliver a true MVP, I cut advanced features in close association with the product team that could have inflated the budget or extended timelines, focusing on core features that met user needs.
  • Monitored timelines closely, enforced deadlines, and aligned sprints with written sign-offs to prevent scope creep and ensure on-time delivery.
  • A clean development handoff was prepared with clearly marked user flows, annotations, and dev walkthroughs to ensure efficient execution.
  • Maintained constant communication with developers, providing feedback throughout the build process to ensure pixel-perfect precision and full accessibility integration.
